Model Changes:
Acura's flagship RL sedan is restyled and then some for 2009. Exterior changes include a new "power plenum" grille, following the other models in the Acura lineup, as well as a new aluminum hood and trunklid, front and rear bumpers, rocker panels, headlights and taillights. The engine is new, too. A 300-hp 3.7L V6 replaces last year's 3.5 liter, and includes variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves. Steering wheel paddle shifters now accompany the standard 5-speed automatic transmission.The suspension has been revised for sportier handling, and inside, the RL gets new gauges, a revised steering wheel and climate controls, more rear seat room, and a new Active Sound Control (ASC) system for improved noise reduction.

Model Value:
The 2009 Acura RL comes loaded with features normally reserved for the options list on other cars. With its revised styling, new 300-hp powerplant, and its own healthy options list, the RL is a luxury sedan without a luxury price.

Model Overview:
Acura's RL is mostly new for 2009, which means the company's engineers have the car's already-excellent refinement to a whole new level. For starters, the exterior has benefited from a complete restyle, which updates the RL's looks to those of the rest of the Acura lineup. Under the skin, a new 3.7L V6 drives all four wheels in the standard AWD setup. The 24-valve VTEC unit produces 300 hp and 271 ft-lb of torque on its way to a 6,800 redline. A 5-speed automatic with overdrive and manual shifting mode is standard. EPA fuel economy estimates are 16 mpg city and 22 mpg on the highway.*The RL comes in two trim levels: Base and Tech Package. Acura's Collision Mitigation Braking System is optional with the Tech Package for an additional $3800.The Base RL comes loaded with plenty of creature comforts, including a power sunroof, HID headlights, steering wheel stereo controls, fog lamps, a Bose 6-disc CD stereo with XM Satellite radio, heated power mirrors, keyless start and dual-zone climate control. Leather seating is also standard, with power controls to both driver and passenger seats. To this luxurious mix, the Tech Package adds a rear parking camera, navigation with traffic rerouting information and Zagat restaurant reviews, 6-level heated and cooled front seats, wood interior trim, active headlights, and Bluetooth handsfree interface. Opt for the ultra-smart Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), and you also get adaptive cruise control, Michelin PAX run-flat tires, and curly maple interior trim. CMBS is powered by a radar transmitter that constantly evaluates distance to objects in front of the RL. If the system detects a possible collision, a series of warning lights and beeps go off in the cabin to alert the driver. If the driver fails to take action by braking and/or turning the wheel, CMBS automatically tugs at the front seat belts and applies initial braking. If collision is unavoidable, the seat belts tighten fully and heavy braking is initiated. The CMBS system can be switched off by the driver at any time. All 2009 RL sedans benefit from a host of standard safety systems. These include antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, stability control, a tire pressure monitor, dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and active headrests. * Based on 2008/2009 EPA mileage estimates, reflecting new EPA fuel economy methods beginning with 2008/2009 models. Acura RL Lease: Overview
As a flagship luxury sedan, the current Acura lease RL is a bit of an oddity. In terms of size, it's actually classified as a midsize car. It comes with a V6 engine exclusively, even though most competing luxury sedans offer an optional V8. But unlike most of its peers, the RL lease comes with a price tag that's -- surprise! -- reasonably affordable. So what's the deal with the Acura lease RL?

Acura lease didn't design the RL lease to be a powerhouse sedan or an extravagant luxo-barge. It is, however, a comfortable and refined sedan, packaged with a high level of user-friendly technology. For buyers in this segment, we think that the RL lease represents the intelligent choice. Alas, it would seem that being the intelligent choice only gets a car so far in terms of sales.

The Acura lease RL has never attained huge popularity and typically lives in the shadow of more prestigious makes and well-known models. Older Acura lease RLs suffer from a similar problem, but to an even greater degree. We like the current-generation car, though, and recommend it for buyers who desire an all-wheel-drive luxury sedan, particularly one that's available with all the latest technology.

Acura RL Lease: Current Acura RL

The Acura lease RL is a midsize luxury sedan. As with other Acura lease models, selecting a style is quite easy, as Acura lease makes nearly everything standard. Powered by a 290-horsepower V6 engine, the RL lease was the first Acura lease to feature Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). This innovative technology continuously varies power among all four wheels to enhance handling and aid wet-weather traction.

Although it doesn't offer the posh reputation of other luxury vehicles, the RL lease nevertheless features a classy, sumptuous interior adorned in high-quality materials, leather and real wood trim. The dash is awash in buttons, which may confuse some, but they serve a welcome redundancy with the optional navigation system's iDrive-like control knob and voice commands. The lease RL's 10-speaker surround-sound stereo with six-CD/DVD audio changer, satellite radio and optional iPod integration is one of the best in the business. An optional Technology Package includes a voice-activated navigation system.

In road tests, we found that the Acura lease RL gets better the harder it's driven thanks to the SH-AWD system that tenaciously maintains traction. The ride is tuned more on the cushier side of the spectrum, so despite offering notable handling abilities, it is still principally designed to be a comfortable cruiser. Our chief complaint has been a lack of low-end grunt. Unlike its competitors, there is no V8 offered.

Acura RL Lease: Past Acura RL Models

The RL lease was introduced in 2005, and offered in only one trim level: loaded. The following year saw the addition of a Technology Package (now the unimaginatively named CMBS/PAX package) that includes adaptive cruise control, run-flat tires and a collision-preventing radar-based active braking system. At this time, the navigation system was standard.

Consumers interested in used Acura lease RLs built before 2005 will be dealing with the first-generation Acura lease RL (known as the 3.5 RL) produced from 1996-2004. The 3.5 RL lease debuted as a replacement for the popular Acura Legend, but its new uncreative name demonstrated an unfortunate change in Acura's philosophy that saw it move in a more staid, Lexus-like direction. This generation also had a high level of standard equipment and typically cost less than its competition, but it couldn't overcome its reserved-to-the-point-of-anonymity styling, unexciting V6 engine and lax driving dynamics.

While front-wheel drive is beneficial in smaller cars, most luxury car buyers seem to prefer the extra performance and handling that come from rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. This wasn't such a big issue during the lease RL's early years, but as newer competing models debuted with more power and more features, the RL lease became increasingly outclassed.

Acura lease didn't change the 3.5 RL lease much during its first generation. In 2000, it received a standard stability control system and an improved navigation system. The most significant changes were made in 2002, when it gained a bit more power and a more firmly tuned suspension.

The lease RL's predecessor was the Acura lease Legend. Available in coupe and sedan body styles, the Legend lease largely lived up to its name, being praised for its sporty nature, strong performance and impeccable fit and finish. As with most Acura/Honda products, reliability was very good.
