BMW lease X5 Review - by Steve Siler,
Car and Driver

The BMW lease X5 isn’t a radical departure from the outgoing model; it promises to keep the best of the model while bringing the mechanical bits, comfort features and, yes, the styling, into accordance with the rest of the BMW lineup.

Thankfully, BMW stylists exercised a gentle hand when reshaping the sheet metal of the BMW lease X5, which BMW still insists on calling a “Sports Activity Vehicle” in spite of it being, for all intents and purposes, a Sport Utility Vehicle. Many of the styling cues of the BMW lease X3 and BMW lease 3-Series can be found on the new BMW lease X5, which wears them relatively well, considering its substantial size. Speaking of size, the new BMW lease X5 grows 2.4 inches in width and a surprising 7.4 inches in length—enough to accommodate an optional two-butt third-row seat—compared with the 2006 model.

To offset the added weight that comes with the additional size, BMW enhanced the BMW lease X5’s engine offerings, which still come in six- and eight-cylinder strengths. The BMW lease X5 3.0si features a 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 260 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque; the 4.8-liter V8 in the BMW lease X5 4.8i develops 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Both engines feature variable cam (double VANOS) and variable valve (VALVETRONIC) timing. The BMW lease X5 3.0si can hit 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, with the BMW lease 4.8i doing the same deed in 6.4 seconds, according to BMW.

All BMW lease X5 models come with the latest version of BMW’s full-time xDrive all-wheel drive system that sends 40% of the drive forces to the front wheels and 60% to the rears under normal circumstances but can vary between the axles as needed depending on conditions. The system also works with the yaw sensors in the DSC system in order to counteract over- and under steer in corners.

Whereas most recent BMWs have experienced radical interior transformations upon revision, the BMW lease X5’s interior looks remarkably close to that of the 2006 model, only with nicer detailing, more space and perhaps the nicest integration we’ve seen yet of the iDrive system, which sadly comes standard on all BMW lease X5 variants. Optional features include a heads-up instrument display, adaptive cruise control, and a trick rear-seat DVD player on a swiveling screen.

Second-row legroom, a sore topic—literally—for the old model, increases by 1.5 inches. As ever, the BMW lease X5 features a handy two-piece tailgate, while the additional length allows for a cargo floor that is four inches longer than before. Cargo space rises to 75.2 cubic feet—eight percent greater than the outgoing model.

Should you choose to allow the stereo to drown out BMW’s traditionally mellifluous engine sounds, you should be pleased: even the base system comes with 12 speakers and two subwoofers, or one can upgrade to a 16-speaker system with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. As with any self-respecting automobile that portends to cater to technocrats, the X5 comes standard with an auxiliary input jack for your iPod or similar device.
