Model Strengths:
Superb handling; unique coupe body style; exclusive M model; outstanding acceleration available.
Model Changes:
The BMW Z4 roadster and coupe are carried over with almost no changes for 2008. The wheels offered as part of the available Sport Package are now 18-inchers, and Stratus Gray Metallic replaces Silver Gray Metallic in the color palette.
Model Value:
The 2008 BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel-drive sports car available either as a roadster or as a racy-looking, low-slung coupe. Among roadsters, the Z4 especially stands out for its better power-to-weight ratio than the Mercedes-Benz SLK, and for its more traditional soft-top convertible arrangement. The entire engine range consists of smooth, responsive inline six-cylinder engines.
Model Overview:
The 2008 BMW Z4 roadster comes in three models (3.0i, 3.0si, and M), and coupes come in two trims (3.0si and M). Each trim brings different engines underhood. The 3.0i is powered by a 215-horsepower, 3.0L in-line six-cylinder engine, while the 3.0si gets a more powerful, 255-horsepower version of the 3.0L; both have Valvetronic variable valve lift. The top-of-the-range M includes a 330-horsepower, 3.2L six. All three models come with a six-speed manual gearbox, but a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with steering-wheel shift paddles is optional on the 3.0i and 3.0si.Roadsters have a fully automatic power folding soft top, with dual-layer material, an aluminum and magnesium frame for light weight, and a heated rear window. The Z4's proportions, with a long hood and a rearward seating position, allow for an excellent weight distribution and good dynamics for high-performance driving. The 3.0i and 3.0si models have electric power steering, while the M has a hydraulic power steering system. Coupes get a special performance-optimized suspension calibration, and all Z4s come with run-flat tires.Inside, the Z4's interior is rather tight, as can be expected from a small two-seater, but it is appointed with luxurious upholster and trim. The dash is trimmed in either wood or brushed aluminum; 3.0i models have faux-leather upholstery inside, while the 3.0si gets "High Performance" leather upholstery in one of four color schemes. The 3.0si also adds automatic climate control, and its top, THX-certified audio system has ten speakers, seven-band digital sound processing, and two subwoofers.M models get a number of high-performance improvements and appearance enhancements, including M Dynamic Driving Control, a system that allows the driver to change the characteristics of throttle response along with other variables. There's also a semi-dry sump lubrication system, computer-controlled variable differential lock, a heavy duty clutch, a performance-oriented version of BMW's dynamic stability control which includes dynamic brake control and cornering brake control, cross-drilled special-compound four-wheel disc brakes, and larger front and rear stabilizer bars. Inside, the M models also get Nappa leather seat trim with firmer side bolsters, automatic climate control, white-on-black gauges, a thicker steering wheel, and brushed aluminum trim.A Premium Package brings power sport seats with memory, auto-dimming mirrors, and Bluetooth, while a Sport Package includes Dynamic Driving Control (similar to that in the M), a sportier suspension, and larger 18-inch wheels. Standalone options include a headlight cleaning system, extended leather upholstery, a navigation system, M sport seats, and heated seats.

Twelve years ago, six years after the debut of the Japanese Miata, BMW again reinvented the European sports car with the BMW lease Z3. In 2006, the BMW lease Z4 replaced its sibling. The 2008 BMW lease Z4 has minor changes and is available in roadster and coupe form with two trim levels - 3.0i and 3.0si - as well as the M series version.
The BMW lease 3.0i comes with a 3.0-liter inline six that produces 215 hp with 185 pound-feet of torque. The 0-60 jump with the six-speed manual transmission comes in 6.2 seconds; the automatic follows at 6.6 seconds. The BMW lease 3.0si features the same base engine tuned to produce 255 hp and 225 pound-feet of torque. The 0-60 manual experience takes 5.6 seconds, and the automatic gets there in 5.7. Top speed is 155 mph. The 3.2-liter, 330-hp M version can blast to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.
Reviewers unanimously praise both the six-speed manual transmission - "silky smooth," "crisp," "pleasure to operate" - and the optional six-speed automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters - "decisive, but not harsh," "responsive," "sport-seeking algorithms." The EPA estimates 18/28 mpg with the manual and 19/28 with the automatic.
The BMW lease Z4 handles. In front, forged-aluminum lower arms are incorporated into a strut-type suspension, while more aluminum in the form of cast-aluminum upper transverse links is used in the central-link rear suspension. The car's 50/50 front/rear weight distribution adds to its responsive handling. Combined with BMW's traditional benchmark steering - "quick, weighty, and precise" - the BMW lease Z4's tenuous grip registered 0.93 g on Car and Driver's skid pad, thus earning a spot in the magazine's "Crazy Glue" road-holding class.
Stopping is done in BMW's usual powerful, stable, quick style via four-wheel antilock disc brakes that include all of the automaker's electronic wizardry: Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Stand-by with Dynamic Traction Control, Start-Off Assistant, and Brake Drying.
The BMW lease Z4's interior theme - roadster and coupe - is what one might expect in a "true" sports car: simply practical. Another auto site points out that this is a "driver's car" in which attention is placed on the road. There is, of course, elegant wood or aluminum trim for those who want to divert their attention.
Seats are wide enough and provide good lateral support, and there are the optional M-style seats for even more lateral support. Six-way manually adjustable sports seats are standard. The cockpit has good ergonomics - gauges are an easy read, with shifter and dashboard controls in easy reach.
The BMW lease coupe contains an amazing 12 cubic feet of cargo space, or two moderately sized golf bags, in its uneven luggage bay. With the roadster, you still get a trunk with the top down, but it offers only 9 cubic feet of cargo space. A manual top is standard on the roadster, with a power top optional. Further, this top serves as its own tonneau cover and comes with a defroster-equipped glass rear window.
The BMW lease Z4 is also safe, earning four out of five stars in government crash tests for frontal-impact protection and three stars for side impact safety. In addition to all the electronic wizardry connected to the brakes, the BMW lease Z4's standard safety equipment includes run-flat tires, dual front air bags, active knee protection, and side impact airbags. The roadster also has a rollover protection system.
Fast, nimble, and safe, the BMW lease Z4 is a bargain when compared to its Porsche and Mercedes competition.
