Online Videos by Veoh.com: Ford's best handling Mustang, The Bullitt
Ford Edge Model Strengths:
Ride and handling; seating comfort; styling; safety ratings; available Sync interface and panoramic roof.
Ford Edge Model Changes:
The Ford Edge enters its second model year with a new top-of-the-line Limited model, and a new Interior Appearance Package, which brings red leather seats with contrast stitching. Other features newly available for 2008 include a power liftgate, a voice-activated, DVD-based navigation system, and the Ford Sync system, which provides a voice-activated interface for cell phones and media players. The 18-inch wheels get a new design, and larger 20-inch wheels are now offered. Four new colors join the line for 2008: Vapor Silver Clearcoat Metallic, Light Ice Blue Clearcoat Metallic, Dark Ink Blue Metallic, and White Sand Tri-Coat.
Ford Edge Model Value: (see above)
Ford Edge Model Lease Overview:
Ford's Edge is offered in SE, SEL, and Limited models for 2008. All three are powered by a 265-horsepower, 3.5L V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, and each one offers a choice of an intelligent all-wheel-drive system for all-weather driving, or a more economical front-wheel-drive setup good for warmer-weather states. The active, on-demand all-wheel-drive system can deliver more torque to the wheels that can use it most, even before the other wheels slip, and it's paired with the AdvanceTrac traction control to transfer torque front to back and side to side. All Edge models get the AdvanceTrac with roll stability control system, which helps enhance safety and stability on slippery surfaces or in quick maneuvers. A four-wheel anti-lock braking system, front side thorax air bags, and Safety Canopy side-curtain bags that protect both rows are all standard as well. The Edge can seat five; the second-row seatback reclines, and the seat is also split 60/40 and folds forward providing a level load floor. A fold-flat front passenger seat is also available and provides space for items as long as eight feet. Depending on the model, the rear seat folds either manually with a release or automatically with the EasyFold remote release. With car-derived underpinnings, including a MacPherson strut front suspension, four-link rear independent suspension, and isolated front subframe, the Edge is tuned for a smooth on-road ride with crisp handling. The base SE comes well equipped, including power accessories and keyless entry, but the SEL adds appearance add-ons and convenience features, including fog lamps, chrome exhaust tips, unique upholstery, leather trim, an aluminum instrument panel finish, automatic headlamps, an upgraded sound system, and a reverse sensing system. At the top of the range, the Limited adds heated memory front seats, heated side mirrors, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a fold-flat front passenger seat, and a high-end Audiophile nine-speaker sound system with six-disc changer. The available Ford Panoramic Vista Roof, which offers two large glass panels, a front tilt-and-slide one and a rear fixed one, to provide plenty of natural light when wanted. It comes with power-operated cloth shades. Other standout options include a reverse sensing system, voice-activated navigation, a universal garage door opener, 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, a rear DVD entertainment system, and the Sync hands-free communication and navigation system, which can interface with cell phones and media players, either wirelessly or via USB, using voice commands.
Ford Escape Model Strengths:
New styling; ride and handling; fuel efficiency (four-cylinder and Hybrid); eco-friendly seating material.
Ford Escape Model Changes:
For 2008, the Ford Escape gets restyled inside and out, and also has a number of mechanical improvements. Design-wise, new blacked-out middle side pillars, integrated running boards, and available 17-inch wheels accent a higher beltline, while the hood has been raised and matched with a front fascia and grille that now bears more of a family resemblance to Ford's larger trucks and SUVs. In back, along with new taillamps there are also new step pads. The interior is also reconfigured, with a more upscale feel, redesigned radio and climate controls, and what Ford claims is an industry first: seating surfaces made of 100-percent recycled materials. Also, the emergency brake has been relocated as a floor pedal, and door panels have been resculpted for more space. There are also revised storage bins throughout, and instrument backlighting is in Ice Blue.Mechanically, the Escape gets larger stabilizer bars for crisper handling, a new braking system, and a new electric power assist steering system, along with various improvements to reduce noise and vibration.Safety content has also been increased. Ford's AdvanceTrac with roll stability control and anti-lock brakes are now standard across the line, as are full-length Safety Canopy side-curtain air bags and seat-mounted side air bags for front occupants.
Ford Escape Model Value:
The 2008 Ford Escape is one of the more affordable and economical small SUVs, and its carlike ride and handling along with good maneuverability make it a good choice for urban dwellers. At the same time, the Ford Hybrid model is one of the lowest-priced hybrids and offers an especially practical way to "go green." Across the line, Ford has boosted the appeal of the Escape for 2008 with a new look and significantly upgraded interior.Ford also boasts that the Escape Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient sport utility vehicle in the world, with a city fuel-economy rating of 34 mpg.
Ford Escape Model Lease Overview:
The Ford Escape comes with three different powertrains for 2008: a 153-horsepower, 2.3L four-cylinder, a 200-horsepower, 3.0L V6, or a hybrid powertrain, which pairs a 133- horsepower Atkinson-cycle version of the 2.3L four with an electric motor system, battery pack, regenerative braking, and a sophisticated management system. Four-cylinder and V6 models are offered in XLS, XLT, and Limited trims, but the hybrid powertrain is only available in a single Hybrid model. All models, including the Hybrid, offer a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The AWD system can seamlessly deliver more torque to the back wheels as needed before the front wheels slip, and it also serves to enhance stability when cornering. The system can vary torque front-to-back and side-to-side.A four-speed automatic transmission comes with all Escape four-cylinder and V6 models, except the base XLS four-cylinder, which is also available with a five-speed manual. The Hybrid gets a CVT automatic system. The Hybrid has a "full hybrid" system, meaning that it can operate for short distances and low speeds on electric power alone; the gasoline engine automatically shuts off during those times and when possible at stoplights to help maximize fuel efficiency. EPA ratings for the Hybrid are up this year, to 34 city, 33 highway. The standard Escape is quite fuel-efficient as well; with the four-cylinder and manual transmission, it achieves ratings of 22 city, 28 highway. All Escape models now have the speed-sensitive electric power assist steering system, which eliminates noise and increases efficiency. Four-cylinder and V6 Escapes come with a front disc/rear drum brake system, while Hybrids get four-wheel discs-both with anti-lock.The AdvanceTrac system with roll stability control is now standard; front side air bags plus full-length Safety Canopy side-curtain bags are also included in all models. The Escape now has a plastic-and-polyester seat fabric made of 100 percent post-industrial waste-substances manufactured for retail use that didn't make it to the consumer. Ford says that the use of this material could save an estimated 600,000 gallons of water, 1.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent, and seven million kilowatt hours of electricity.Limited and Hybrid models come equipped with the most luxury and convenience features. Highlights on the Limited include leather upholstery, a keypad entry system, an upgraded sound system, chrome trim and bezels inside, fog lamps, and bright machined aluminum wheels. The Hybrid includes dual-zone automatic climate control, the eco-friendly fabric, fog lamps, and unique alloy wheels.Major options on the Escape include larger 17-inch chrome-clad wheels, a 320-watt Audiophile sound system, Sirius satellite radio, a DVD-based navigation system, leather-trimmed power seats, a power moonroof, a roof rack, and a reverse sensing system.
Ford Expedition Model Strengths:
Smooth ride; interior comfort; towing capability; spacious third-row arrangement (EL).
Ford Expedition Model Changes:
A new King Ranch model is the big news for Ford's 2008 Expedition. The new model brings an image of "rugged sophistication," with unique machined aluminum wheels and special badging outside, plus Chaparral leather trim and upholstery on all rows, wood trim, and a power-folding third-row seat inside. After being redesigned for 2007, the Expedition receives a wider range of standard equipment, and some newly available features, for 2008. Most notably, an available rearview camera system helps with visibility when backing up or towing a trailer. Power running boards are also being introduced as an option across the line. Keyless keypad entry, an electrochromic mirror, heated power mirrors, an overhead console, illuminated visors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are now standard across the model line. Power adjustable pedals, power rear quarter windows, a universal garage door opener, and a reverse sensing system are standard on the top Limited and King Ranch models. There's also a new chrome-clad, 18-inch wheel option on XLT models, and a chrome exhaust tip has been added to the Eddie Bauer model.
Ford Expedition Model Value:
The 2008 Ford Expedition stands out for its combination of smooth ride and interior comfort and quiet with full-size-truck hauling ability, making it a good choice for those who frequently tow. Ford says that the Expedition's 9,200-pound tow capacity is the highest in its class, and that the six-speed automatic transmission allows better fuel economy than with rivals. The Expedition was rated the top Large SUV in Strategic Vision's Total Quality Index, which measures new-vehicle owner satisfaction.
Ford Expedition Model Lease Overview:
The Ford Expedition comes in two sizes for 2008-standard-length, and the extended-length EL, which allows more cargo and seating space in the back. There are also four different models, XLT, Eddie Bauer, Limited, and King Ranch, ranging from well-equipped to very luxurious. All four models are available in standard or EL length and with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The four-wheel-drive system, one that's oriented toward truck duty, has a low range and optional shift-on-the-fly capability; in low range, the electronic throttle recalibrates to allow more precise throttle control. The Expedition has a tough fully-boxed frame for long-term durability in towing and hauling, yet also has an independent rear suspension, which gives it a better ride than many other truck-based SUVs. Variable boost power steering also helps with maneuverability. In all trims, the Ford Expedition is powered by a 5.4L "Ford Triton" V8 engine making 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Expedition can tow up to 9,200 pounds, while the six-speed automatic allows a taller top gear and improved fuel economy. Both Expedition models have three rows of seating, and the second row is available either in a 40/20/40-split bench or two captain's chairs. On the EL the third row is not only roomier but easier to access, thanks to larger rear doors. Overall, the EL is nearly 15 inches longer than the standard-length model and rides on a wheelbase that's a foot longer. The EL also has more cargo space behind the third row-24 cubic feet more than the standard-length.The Expedition has seat-mounted front side air bags plus head-protecting Safety Canopy side-curtain air bags with rollover detection for front and rear occupants. AdvanceTrac with RSC, an electronic stability control system, is standard across the model line as well. Both the Limited and King Ranch models are loaded with luxury features, but the new King Ranch model, which slots above the Limited at the top of the range, provides additional luxury items inside, especially in the way of high-quality Chaparral leather seats and trim. Also, a total of seven wheel designs are available across the Expedition line, including chrome-clad 20-inchers.Standout options include the new rearview camera system, power-deploying running boards, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a navigation system, a power moonroof, a power liftgate system, power adjustable pedals, heated and cooled front seats, second-row captain's chairs, and the power-folding third-row seat.
Ford Explorer Model Strengths:
Generous standard safety equipment; quiet cabin; good balance of around-town driving, towing, and off-road capabilities.
Ford Explorer Model Changes:
For 2008, Ford added a new full-time all-wheel drivetrain to the lineup mid-model year. Also, the Ford XLT now features folding power mirrors with integrated approach lamps as standard, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Eddie Bauer trim gets a freshening with new two-tone bumpers and 20-inch wheels, in addition to other decorative touches. The Limited is mostly the same as last year while adding a HomeLink universal garage door opener and power-adjustable pedals. Side curtain air bags are standard on all Explorer trims for 2008.Ford's new Microsoft-developed SYNC media system is now available as an option on the XLT trim, and is standard on all higher trims. It integrates a voice-activated interface with portable music player connectivity.
Ford Explorer Model Value:
The 2008 Explorer is a traditional body-on-frame SUV, which makes it attractive to buyers in the market for a mid-sized SUV with towing and off-road capability. Safety equipment, including standard stability control with a rollover sensor, will appeal to the family haulers. Another plus for those with large broods is the availability of manual- or power-folding third-row seating.
Ford Explorer Model Lease Overview:
Redesigned in 2006, the 2008 Ford Explorer is well positioned to compete against other truck- or car-based mid-sized SUVs. The body-on-frame construction will please those in need of towing capacity, while the independent rear suspension and stiffer frame enhance handling on paved surfaces. Optional third-row seating on all trim levels expands utility for larger families. For those with the occasional boat or basketball-team-sized contingent of kids (or both) who choose not to pop for a large SUV, the mid-sized Explorer must be considered. The standard V6 engine produces 210 horsepower while the optional V8 cranks out 292 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The V8 is paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox, which is a nice segment-leading plus. At just a hair over $26,000, the base 2WD V6 XLT offers impressive standard equipment for the price, including air conditioning, fog lamps, stability control, aluminum wheels, anti-lock brakes, privacy glass, remote keyless entry, side seat air bags, and more. Options available include a power moonroof, navigation system, and heated windshield, leather seats, keyless entry, and Sirius satellite radio so even the XLT can be generously loaded.
Ford F150 Model Strengths:
Reputation for durability; towing and hauling ability; range of models for specific uses.
Ford F150 Model Changes:
Ford's F-150 pulls into 2008 with only minor changes. Two new models-the Lariat Limited, and the XL SuperCrew-join the F-150 lineup for 2008, and a new Wheels and Stripes Package is available to dress up the mid-range STX. Additionally, a tachometer is now standard on XL and STX models with manual transmission, manual-telescoping trailer-tow mirrors are available with the XLT and Lariat Chrome Packages, and a remote start system is now available as a factory option. There's also a new factory-installed Cargo Management System available on any F-150 with the 6.5-foot Styleside box. It uses side rails, bins, and crossbars that hold up to 100 pounds, ideal for hanging skis or fishing poles. Individual tool bins can also function as coolers. A single key can be used for all the bins. Two new exterior colors, Stone Green and Mahogany (King Ranch only), join the lineup.
Ford F150 Model Value:
The 2008 Ford F-150 has the widest range of body configurations in the industry, according to Ford, and has a tow rating of up to 11,000 pounds and payload capacity of up to 3,050 pounds. Ford also says that there are more Ford trucks on the road with more than 250,000 miles.
Ford F150 Model Lease Overview:
The Ford F-150 is available in three cab styles for 2008-regular, SuperCab, and SuperCrew-plus three box lengths, two box styles-regular and Flareside-and five different models. Each body style features four doors, and each is available with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. On FX4 and Lariat models, two captain's chairs are available, with a floor shifter; other models have a 40/20/40-split bench seat.Three different engines are available on the F-150: a 202-horsepower, 4.2L V6; a 248-horsepower, 4.6L V8; and a top 5.4L V8 that makes 300 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 5.4L, capable of running on up to 85 percent ethanol (E85) is also available. Torque-based electronic throttle control helps improve drivability, fuel economy, and refinement. The F-150 has a fully boxed frame with hydroformed front rails, which helps provide strength for heavy loads and stiffness to reduce shuddering on rough roads. V8 engines also get liquid-filled engine mounts for improved refinement. Four-wheel vented anti-lock disc brakes are standard across the model line. The F-150's five trim levels span a wide range from basic hauler with wind-up windows and no air conditioning up to the luxurious Lariat model. The mid-range STX and XLT models add many popular features, while the FX4 comes with some of the hardware needed to be off-road ready. The Lariat brings expanded conveniences including automatic climate control, a trip computer, leather trim and upholstery, power heated side mirrors, and a power driver's seat.A new Lariat Limited model gets a custom White Sand Metallic paint, along with body-colored bumpers, fascia, door-handle bezels, and other pieces for a monochromatic appearance. Headlamps are presented in Dark Shadow Gray, four-inch stainless-steel tubular running boards and 22-inch polished forged-aluminum wheels draw attention, while inside there are two-tone leather captain's chairs, a unique instrument cluster, and leather trim. The new XL SuperCrew model gets power side mirrors, color-coordinated carpet and mats, an overhead console, 40/20/40-split cloth front seats, and a CD stereo. A feature unique to the F-150 is the mid-box, a steel storage box with double-paneled doors that's accessible from both sides of the vehicle and unlocks with the driver's door key. The mid-box arrangement is available on the regular cab and SuperCab, and only in an Oxford White color.A rearview camera system is also among the F-150's options; it uses a camera mounted near the tailgate handle and displays a video image on the rearview mirror.
Ford Mustang Model Strengths:
Bold, all-American styling; available as a coupe or convertible ranging from mild to wild; high bang for the buck across the range; impressive safety.
Ford Mustang Model Changes:
The iconic Ford Mustang remains largely unchanged for 2008, though new exterior colors are available; Vapor Clearcoat Metallic, Dark Candy Apple Red Clearcoat Metallic, and Silver Clearcoat Metallic replace Tungsten, Redfire, and Satin Silver. The top-tier Shelby GT500 adds only Vapor Clearcoat Metallic.Ambient interior lighting and high intensity discharge (HID) headlights will debut as an option on all Mustangs. V6 coupes will now offer 18-inch premium polished forged wheels, and all V6 cars will offer an optional Safety & Security Package, which includes anti-lock brakes, traction control, an active anti-theft system, and a wheel locking kit. Front side air bags become standard across the range. V6 and GT convertibles can be ordered with the same high-quality fabric top found on the Shelby GT500 Mustang convertible.Three special-edition Mustangs are planned for 2008: the "Warriors in Pink" Edition on V6 Premium coupes and convertibles with the automatic; the 315-hp Bullitt Mustang; and the 540-horsepower Shelby GT500 KR "King of the Road" Mustang, with just 1,000 available.
Ford Mustang Model Value:
The 2008 Mustang is a best bet in the fun per dollar category. The 4-liter V6 with 210 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque is a comfortable commuter that offers decent performance and fuel economy rated at 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway, while the potent 4.6-liter V8 with 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque available in the GT gives far more expensive cars a run for their money. The Mustang GT is the most affordable performance V8 available today.
Ford Mustang Model Lease Overview:
In its shape and substance, the 2008 Ford Mustang recalls the popular pony car of 1967-69. The Mustang relies on simple architecture to achieve its impressive results-rear-wheel drive, a solid rear axle, and a big engine up front. This proven formula has worked well for the car for more than 40 years, and in GT form, the 300-horsepower V8 returns 0-60 times in the low 5-second range, which is fast enough to keep up with exotics costing twice as much. Ford builds Mustangs for everyone -- "a steed for every need". All coupes and convertibles come with the smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission standard and offer a five-speed automatic, except for the Shelby cars, which only come with a six-speed manual. The base V6 Deluxe offers plenty of standard features for comfort and convenience, including remote keyless entry, air conditioning, four-way manual adjustable driver seat, cruise control, and more. The V6 Premium Package makes standard a Shaker 500 audio system with six-disc CD changer and MP3 player, and power adjustable seats. A V6 Pony Package includes a unique grille, fog lamps, a rear spoiler, Z-rated tires, Pony fender badges, and other appearance enhancements. A Ford Warriors In Pink appearance package is available on the Premium V6 models, with proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. In V8-powered GT Deluxe and Premium coupes and convertibles, power seats are standard, as are 17-inch aluminum wheels, anti-lock brakes, fog lamps, and a rear spoiler. Premium standard features include the Shaker 500 system and leather seats. A Premium GT-only option is a 3.55:1 axle ratio, and the California Special Package, which features unique appearance accessories and badging. The Bullitt Mustang (see video above) includes a more powerful V8 with 315 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, specially tuned suspension and brakes, a unique Dark Highland Green paint color, and special badging. The GT500 KR utilizes a 540-horsepower 5.4L supercharged V8, short-throw six-speed shifter, and unique suspension tuning. It is available in the spring of 2008 and will be limited to just 1,000 units. While the Mustang's exterior and interior remain largely the same for 2008, the standardization of front side air bags provides an extra level of safety in every Mustang, from the entry-level V6 Deluxe coupe to the top-of-the-line Shelby GT500 KR. This helps explain the Mustang's perfect five-star safety rating in all NHTSA crash tests. The convertible is the first open car ever to achieve such results.
