Mercedes-Benz Models for lease Overviews

2008 Mercedes C-Class Model Strengths: Fashionable new look; available all-wheel drive; focused Luxury and Sport models.

2008 Mercedes C-Class Model Changes: The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been completely redesigned for 2008, with an all-new look inside and out, revised suspension and steering systems, available all-wheel drive and a new seven-speed automatic transmission. Most notably, the C-Class's lineup has been consolidated to focused Sport and Luxury models, which differ significantly cosmetically and mechanically. Sport models are most easily distinguished from Luxury models by their different grille and front end; they get a large integral emblem rather than a conventional hood ornament and chromed grille, which the Luxury models have.

2008 Mercedes C-Class Model Value: The new 2008 Mercedes C-Class is about four inches longer and two inches wider than the model it replaces, and with the interior reconfigured it's no longer one of the more cramped small luxury sedans. Its availability as a Luxury or Sport model-now with a quite different appearance for each-also increases the C-Class's appeal both to sport-sedan enthusiasts and to traditionalists who value ride and comfort more than performance.

2008 Mercedes C-Class Model Overview: The new, redesigned 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has a more rakish appearance yet also has a roomy interior; overall, it's about four inches longer and two inches wider than the model it replaces. It's now offered with two engines-designated C300 and C350-and in two quite different models. The Sport model is geared more towards sharp handling and a contemporary appearance, while the Luxury model is more comfort-oriented and more closely follows traditional Mercedes-Benz styling cues.C300 models are powered by a 228-horsepower, 3.0L V6 engine, while the C350 has a 268-horsepower, 3.5L. A 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is also available on the C300 but not on the C350. The all-wheel drive is delivered through an all-new system that's integrated with the transmission and saves weight compared to the system used in previous model years. The C300 can be had in Luxury or Sport guise, while the C350 is only offered as a Sport model. The C300 Sport has a six-speed transmission with an optional seven-speed automatic. The rest of the models have the seven-speed standard.Sport models get staggered-width 17-inch twin-spoke wheels, plus sport shocks, stiffer springs, and thicker stabilizer bars for a firmer ride and crisper handling. They also ride a half-inch lower. Inside, Sport models get a three-spoke steering wheel in place of the Luxury's four-spoke design, and aluminum (C300) or Birdseye maple (C350) trim in place of the burl walnut. The instrument panel on the new C-Class has been redesigned with three round-rather than arced-gauges for a sportier, more traditional appearance, and there's now a 12-function information display included.Safety features are as expected, with ESP stability control, anti-lock four-wheel disc brakes, and six air bags among the standard features; active front head restraints are also included.A Bluetooth hands-free calling interface is now standard across the model line, as is an eight-speaker, 100-watt sound system with CD/MP3 player. There are steering-wheel controls that apply both to the audio functions and to the available navigation system.Top options include a COMAND screen-based interface, a navigation system, and a new Multimedia Package, which includes four gigabytes of music-storage space-enough for about 1,000 songs. The system will also read music from a memory card, and the contents are automatically identified via a built-in Gracenote music database.

2008 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Model Strengths: Unique body style; very roomy interior with space for up to seven; comfort and luxury.

2008 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Model Changes: For 2008, rear-wheel-drive is available on the R350, allowing for a slightly smaller entry price. The high-performance R500 and R63 AMG versions have been discontinued. Newly optional on all R Classes is three-passenger second row seating, making it possible to seat seven. Outside, standard AMG body touches and 18-inch wheels add a sporty panache.

2008 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Model Value: The 2008 Mercedes-Benz R Class is a roomy vehicle and an unusual, luxurious alternative to either a minivan or sport utility vehicle. Overall, it's one of the best vehicles for transporting a large number of people (up to seven) in comfort. A newly available rear-wheel-drive version and the discontinuation of the high-performance R500 and R63 AMG versions render the R Class strictly a luxury people-mover. The R320 CDI, with its efficient turbo-diesel engine, promises to be as efficient as a minivan at the pump.

2008 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Model Overview: With a more streamlined profile than most sport utility vehicles, Mercedes-Benz's 2008 R Class combines some of the attributes of a minivan and tall wagon, with a roomy, luxurious interior that has seating for up to seven. It still retains some of the rugged running gear of an SUV.R Class models either come with rear-wheel drive or the 4MATIC road-oriented all-wheel-drive system that includes special functions for downhill driving and starting out uphill (Hill Start Assist). This system normally has a 50/50 torque split but can bring more power to the front or rear wheels as needed. The four-wheel independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steering afford a smooth ride and sharp, carlike handling. The R350 comes with the 268-horsepower, 3.5L V6 engine that's used throughout much of the Mercedes-Benz line. Also available is the R320 CDI model, which includes a 3.0L, direct-injection, turbocharged diesel V6 engine making 215 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. With ratings of 18 mpg city, 24 highway, the diesel enables the larger and heavier R Class to get fuel economy that rivals gasoline-powered minivans. All R Class models come fully equipped as luxury touring vehicles, with standard dual-zone climate control, heated mirrors, Birdseye maple trim, a SmartKey locking and entry system, and an eight-speaker, MP3-compatible sound system with auxiliary input. There's also an optional panoramic sunroof that extends over rear occupants. An adaptive damping system (ADS) is also optional. All the safety features that would be expected in a large people mover are standard. The first and second rows get side air bags, but there are also side-curtain air bags extending to all three rows. Stability control and anti-lock brakes with brake assist are also standard.Top options include a harman/kardon Logic7 sound system, tri-zone climate control, the Parktronic parking aid, Distronic smart cruise control. DVD-based navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment package.

2008 Mercedes-Benz M C-Class Model Strengths: Comfortable ride and seating; off-road ability; fuel-efficiency (ML320 CDI); acceleration (ML550 and ML63).

2008 Mercedes-Benz M C-Class Model Changes: For 2008 there are a number of equipment changes to Mercedes-Benz's V6 ML350 and diesel ML320 CDI, including larger, 19-inch wheels, a new grille and trim, and a standard power sunroof. A new ML550 model replaces the ML500, and it includes the new-generation, 382-horsepower, 5.5L V8, as well as additional equipment from in-house tuner AMG. The high-performance ML63 AMG carries over with no significant changes. Also, a limited-edition, "Edition 10" V6 model for 2008 comes loaded with features and celebrates the tenth anniversary of the M Class. It has a unique interior scheme with Birch and Macadamia woods and black leather, special Obsidian Black or Arctic White paint, and a chrome shadow finish for the grille and skid plates.

2008 Mercedes-Benz M C-Class Model Value: Mercedes-Benz's 2008 M Class is on-road friendly and a good family hauler, with improved ride and handling, while still maintaining its off-road ability. The ML320 CDI is notably frugal as well as luxurious, while the ML550 adds more luxury and power, and the ML63 AMG leads the pack in exclusivity, at about double the price of the ML350.

2008 Mercedes-Benz M C-Class Model Overview: The family of Mercedes ML models, together referred to as the M Class, cover a range of duties from family-hauling and cargo-hauling errands to moderate off-roading-all in comfort and luxury. The base ML350 has a 268-horsepower, 3.5L V6 engine, while the mid-range ML320 CDI has a 3.0L turbo diesel V6 that offers the power of a V8 with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder, according to Mercedes. At the top of the line is the ML63 AMG, with a powerful 503-horsepower, 6.3L AMG-built V8. Each model comes with a seven-speed automatic transmission. For 2008, the ML550 makes its debut, replacing the ML500. It comes with a 382-horsepower, 5.5L aluminum-block V8, plus a standard sunroof, exclusive AMG styling and 19-inch AMG wheels, and running boards. Both the V6 and V8 have variable valve timing, a tumble flap, and a two-stage intake manifold for good throttle response whether in stop-and-go traffic or passing at high speed. The ML550 can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, according to the manufacturer. All ML models include the 4Matic full-time four-wheel-drive system, which has a low range for off-roading. A sophisticated traction control system assists the drive system and incorporates a downhill speed regulator and hill-holder for stability on steep slopes with limited traction. The ML is built on a unibody platform and has an independent suspension-double-wishbone front suspension and four-link rear setup-for good, carlike handling and a smooth ride.Standard safety features on the ML include front side air bags, side curtain air bags that span all outboard occupants, active headrests to help prevent whiplash, and the Pre-Safe system, which prepares safety systems for an anticipated crash. The M Class has spacious seating for five adults, and the 60/40-split second row folds forward to expand the cargo area when needed. The stylish interior especially stands out for its available burl walnut or aluminum trim.Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, power front seats, cruise control, a power sunroof, a multi-function steering wheel, dual heated side mirrors, and a retractable cargo cover. The ML320 CDI has similar equipment to the ML350, but the ML550 adds heated front seats, larger front brake discs, burl walnut trim, running boards and a rain sensor. At the top of the line, the ML63 brings Airmatic suspension, huge 20-inch alloy wheels, an AMG Nappa leather interior with sport seats, burl walnut trim, and a CD changer.Major options through the line include the COMAND in-dash multi-media interface and navigation system, the height-adjustable Airmatic air suspension with active damping, a harmon/kardon Logic 7 sound system with auxiliary input, a rear-seat entertainment system, heated rear seats, an ambient lighting package, and bi-xenon headlamps that swivel to help illuminate into corners.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Model Strengths: Awash in comfort; luxury powerhouse; smooth ride; otherworldly performance (AMG models); convertible models boast a legitimate back seat.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Model Changes: The Mercedes CLK Class lineup of coupes and convertibles carries over to 2008 unchanged, in anticipation of a completely redesigned model set to arrive for 2009.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Model Value: With the exception of the high-performance 2008 CLK63 AMG Black Series, the Mercedes-Benz CLK Class coupes and convertibles are luxurious mid-size two-doors that prioritize comfort and interior appointments above overt sportiness. The models have generously proportioned, supportive front seats across the line, while even the CLK convertible is a rarity among drop-tops as a true four-seater, with enough space for two in back. Both of the CLK63 AMG models-especially the Black Series-offer a different, more exclusive equipment set, with scorching, track-ready performance without a big sacrifice in comfort.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Model Overview: The Mercedes-Benz CLK Class is offered in three different models (CLK350, CLK550, and CLK63 AMG), and in two different body styles (coupe and convertible). The CLK350 comes with a 268-horsepower, 3.5L V6, while the CLK550 includes a 382-horsepower, 5.5L V8. The entire CLK line uses a seven-speed automatic transmission, and all CLKs have rear-wheel drive. The CLK63 AMG convertible and CLK63 AMG Black Series coupe get a number of subtle visual cues and not-so-subtle high-performance modifications from Mercedes' in-house tuner, AMG, including hand-built V8 engines modified for high-performance track driving, a performance exhaust system, a sport-tuned suspension, stronger brakes, better-bolstered heated sport seats, and special aluminum trim. The Mercedes CLK63 AMG convertible gets a 6.3L V8 making 475 horsepower, while the CLK63 AMG Black Series coupe gets a 500-horsepower version of that engine, plus even more high-performance equipment including carbon-fiber bodywork, carbon-fiber trim and stainless steel trim inside, and a number of additional convenience and safety features such as bi-xenon headlamps with active curve illumination. The entire line of CLK models comes very well equipped, with ten-way power front seats, leather upholstery and trim, burl walnut trim, dual-zone climate control with sun and humidity sensors and a pollen filter, an infrared Smart Key entry system, and a six-speaker sound system standard on the base CLK350. Options include a sunroof, a DVD navigation system, heated seats, and Sirius satellite radio.CLK convertibles include a weather-insulated, multi-layer power-folding cloth top and automatic rollover-sensing pop-up roll bars. The entire CLK line has a generous list of safety features including anti-lock brakes with brake assist and the ESP stability control system; coupes get side air bags and side-curtain air bags covering both rows, while convertibles have seat-integrated combination head/thorax bags. Rear side bags are available on coupes.

2008 Mercedes Benz S-Class Model Strengths: High performance and safety; exceptional ride quality and comfort; cutting-edge technology.

2008 Mercedes Benz S-Class Model Changes: Following a complete redesign in 2007, the 2008 S Class adds a second AMG version-the 6.3L V8-powered S63. Sirius satellite radio is now standard on the S550s. On the S65 AMG, the panorama sunroof moves from options list to the standards list, as do the multicontour massaging rear seats and Distronic adaptive cruise control. As usual, Mercedes' big flagship luxury sedan features leading-edge technology such as "smart" massaging seats, a night-vision system, and an advanced cruise control system.

2008 Mercedes Benz S-Class Model Value: Mercedes-Benz's S Class has always been where traditional luxury and cutting-edge technology meet, and the 2008 offerings broaden the lineup with the addition of the 6.3L V8-powered S63 AMG. After the 2007 series redesign, today's S Class sedans reign over a new, high-performance realm. Furthermore, the S Class continues to build on its reputation for safety with an abundance of active and passive safety features. There is not, understandably, a plethora of choices for large, high-performance luxury sedans. With base prices spanning over $100,000, from the rear-wheel drive S550 at $86,700 up to the superb S65 AMG at $194,000, the S Class offers an impressive range of choices in its segment.

2008 Mercedes Benz S-Class Model Overview: The 2008 S550 has a 382-horsepower 5.5L V8 engine, while the S600 gets a 5.5L twin-turbo V12 engine that makes 510 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. The S550's V8 is matched to a seven-speed automatic transmission, while the S600's V12 runs through a five-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available on the S550.Both the 550 and the 600 come extremely well equipped with both traditional luxury and comfort features and the latest high-tech safety and driving aids. All S Class models come with eight air bags.Full leather upholstery and hand-polished wood trim are standard inside the S550, while the S600 gets hand-polished Gloss Burl Walnut trim. One especially notable interior feature is the Dynamic Multi-Contour Seats, standard on the S600 and optional on the S550. In the front seats, ,b>11 individually adjustable air chambers optimize support for your back, even adapting for cornering forces. The standard sound system is a harmon/kardon audio system with 13 channels and 14 speakers. The system is MP3 and DVD audio compatible and also includes a six-disc changer and memory-card reader. The S550 comes with plenty of high-tech equipment, including a navigation system with a built-in 20-GB hard drive, heated seats, special interior ambient lighting, a power rear sunblind, dual-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlamps with active curve illumination, heated washers, and a hands-free communication system with voice control. The S600 adds nearly all the remaining S550 options as standard equipment, including an active night-vision system, dynamic rearview monitor, the Distronic Plus radar-based cruise control system, ventilated Dynamic Multi-Contour seating for the front and back, active head restraints, active body control (ABC), and a panoramic glass sunroof. All S Class models get the latest version of the COMAND system, a screen-based interface that controls a host of vehicle settings, plus navigation, audio, and climate control functions. The S Class also gets a new Brake Assist Plus system, which warns the driver of the potential for a collision, then applies full braking through the powerful four-wheel vented-disc system the instant the driver touches the brake pedal; the system also primes the car's safety systems. The S600 is also the first vehicle to be equipped with adaptive LED brake lights that flash rapidly during emergency braking, according to Mercedes-Benz.The S63 and S65 AMG versions are available for performance enthusiasts, and feature all manner of AMG enhancements. The S63 AMG is new for 2008, and offers the AMG panache at a base price of $127,000 versus the S65's $194,000. The S63 is powered by a 518-horsepower 6.3L V8 that is mated to a smooth seven-speed automatic transmission. Highlights of the S65 AMG include a bi-turbo 6.0L V12 engine and the exclusivity that a $194,000 price tag offers.

2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Model Strengths: Convenient retractable hardtop; safety; refinement and lack of interior noise; performance.

2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Model Changes: There are only small changes to the Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster series for 2007. On the SLK350, the seven-speed automatic transmission becomes standard as part of a 10th Anniversary package which also includes special badging and red interior trim accents. Base prices increase slightly for all three SLK trims, and now range from $43,900 for the SLK280 up to $62,950 for the SLK55 AMG.

2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Model Value: With a secure, power retractable hardtop, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster offers more refinement and civility than budget-priced roadsters like the Mazda Miata and Pontiac Solstice, and provides a luxurious interior and performance similar to that of the larger SL. It also ranks as one of the safest convertibles, with head-protective side air bags.

2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Model Overview: Three different variants of the Mercedes SLK roadster are again offered for 2008, each with progressively more powerful engines: there's the SLK280, with a 228-horsepower, 3.0L V6; the SLK350, with a 268-horsepower, 3.5L V6; and the high-performance SLK55 AMG, with a 355-horsepower V8.Both of the V6 models have all-aluminum engines with variable valve timing, so there's plenty of torque available just off idle. They also incorporate a balance shaft for smoothness. The SLK280 is offered with either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic with Touch Shift manual control. The SLK350 for 2008 is only available with the seven-speed automatic as part of a 10th anniversary package. The SLK55 AMG comes with a long list of special performance-oriented equipment, including a specially built 5.5L V8, a retuned suspension, 18-inch high-performance tires, and powerful upgraded brakes, plus Formula 1?inspired appearance cues and additional luxury features inside such as Nappa leather upholstery, heated seats, velour carpeting, ambient lighting, and special trim. But the base SLK280 is no slouch. It can accelerate to 60 in 6.1 seconds, according to the automaker. The SLK350 is considerably faster at 5.4 seconds, and the SLK55 can get to 60 in only 4.8 seconds. All three models are electronically limited to a 155-mph top speed. The power-retracting hardtop can transform the SLK from a coupe to an open-air car in only 22 seconds. Also, a clever rear window design swivels separately into place to allow the top to stow away in an especially small space at the top of the trunk.Despite the emphasis on performance, safety does not take second stage in the SLK. Roll bars are built into the structure to help protect in a rollover, while knee-protecting air bags are standard, along with head-thorax air bags that provide an unusually high level of protection for a convertible. Mercedes-Benz's ESP stability control is standard, plus brake assist, which helps apply peak braking force when needed.Major options on the V6 models include dual-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlamps with heated washers, an appearance package that adds vavona wood trim, and an AMG Sport Package, which brings the wheels, suspension, and many of the appearance add-ons of the SLK55.One standout feature of the SLK is the Airscarf, an optional system that greatly improves comfort and enables top-down driving in cooler weather. The system, which is built into the seatbacks, blows warm air from the head restraints over the neck and compensates automatically for vehicle speed.

2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Model Strengths: Performance (E550 and E63); fuel efficiency (E320 Bluetec); spacious interior; ride comfort.

2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Model Changes: For 2008, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class continues without major changes, but a new AMG Sport Package brings many of the appearance cues from the E63 AMG-including the flashy wheels, AMG steering wheel, and manual shift paddles-to the V6 E350 or V8 E550. Also, the PRE-SAFE system is now standard across the entire E-Class line.

2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Model Value: The E-Class range of luxury sedans and wagons can fit a wide range of needs, from the fast, showy, and exclusive E63 AMG to the more practical E350 and the economical, green-friendly E320 Bluetec diesel. Across the line, the E-Class has a very roomy interior and nice ride, both which make it well-suited for long trips. With 4Matic all-wheel drive available on E350 and E550 models, the E-Class also makes a good all-weather bet for those who live in the Snow Belt, too.

2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Model Overview: Four different models of the E-Class are now offered in the U.S. The E350 has a 268-horsepower, 3.5L V6; the E550 has a 382-horsepower, 5.5L V8; the high-performance E63 AMG has a 507-horsepower, 6.3L V8; and the E320 Bluetec comes with a 3.0L turbodiesel V6 that makes 208 horsepower and 388 lb-ft of torque. The E350 and E63 are also available in a wagon body style in addition to the four-door sedan. The E350 and E550 have a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system available. All models get a seven-speed automatic transmission. The new 6.3L V8 in the E63 AMG is the first engine to be completely developed by AMG; it has four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket-style tappets, and a variable intake manifold. The E63, as the performance leader of the line, can reach 60 mph in only 4.3 seconds; it can also be ordered with a performance package that lifts the 155-mph electronically limited top speed to 186 mph. It includes a specially tuned Airmatic sport suspension, a limited-slip differential, 19-inch alloy wheels, larger front brake discs, and an AMG sport steering wheel with paddle shifters.Meanwhile, the E320 Bluetec is as clean as a modern gasoline car, according to Mercedes-Benz, and the 3.0L CDI V6 is ranked 32 highway in the EPA cycle. Window curtain air bags and side-impact air bags are standard on the E-Class, along with PRE-SAFE, a system that tenses the seatbelts if it anticipates a collision, and closes the sunroof and side windows if it anticipates a loss of control. Each of the E-Class models come very well equipped as luxury cars. Options include a hands-free system, DVD navigation, side window blinds, Sirius satellite radio, the Parktronic parking aid, bi-xenon headlamps with active curve illumination, and a panorama sunroof. A newly available AMG Sport Package adds much of the E63's appearance equipment to the E350 or E550.

2008 MBZ GL-Class Model Strengths: As nimble as a much smaller vehicle; available with two powerful gas V8s or a modern diesel; luxurious, reliable, safe, and stylish.

2008 MBZ GL-Class Model Changes: New for 2008, the GL550 adds Mercedes' impressive 5.5L V8 engine to the GL Class. These vehicles are built alongside-and share many parts with-the M and R Classes. Due in part to its unibody construction, the GL Class offers nearly the same agility as smaller SUVs, only it carries a gigantic 83.3 cubic feet of cargo space. All models feature automatic four-wheel-drive and a smooth seven-speed automatic transmission.

2008 MBZ GL-Class Model Value: The 2008 GL Class is the large basketball-team-sized SUV in the Mercedes stable, making M-B a serious contender in the full-size luxury sport utility segment. The GL320 CDI has a state-of-the-art diesel engine. Besides offering enormous reserves of torque and making the GL320 CDI one of the only seven-passenger SUVs that can boast a highway fuel economy rating of 24 mpg, it is quiet, doesn't smell, and satisfies emissions requirements. The GL450 V8 is also a remarkable vehicle for family hauling adventures, with loads of luxury features and room, as well as 335 horsepower. But if even that's not enough, the GL550 kicks out 382 horses to drive its massive 21-inch aluminum wheels, and most of the goodies that are optional on the lesser GLs are standard on the GL550.

2008 MBZ GL-Class Model Overview: For 2007, Mercedes-Benz rounded out their family-oriented array by introducing the seven-seat GL Class, and for 2008 the manufacturer adds the higher-performance GL550 to the lineup, with its 5.5L V8 and 21-inch wheels. The 4.7L V8 found in the GL450 is a derivative of the four-valve-per-cylinder engine that first appeared in the S550. In the GL, it makes 335 horsepower and 339 ft-lbs. of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission helps the GL450 sprint to 60 mph in only 7.4 seconds. The GL320 CDI starts at $53,000, $2,500 less than the GL450, and was introduced late during the 2007 model year. While it only makes 215 horsepower, the 3.2L V6 diesel engine makes a whopping 398 lb-ft or torque. It will banish all your old ideas of what a diesel engine is like, too: it's quiet, has no noticeable odor, and offers a tidal wave of torque. The GL550, starting at $76,975, improves the powertrain lineup with Mercedes' impressive 5.5L V8. Outside, 21-inch wheels and more aggressive styling for the front grille and fender flares are standard. Rounding out the remainder of the GL550's $21,475 base price differential is much of the GL450's optional equipment list, including trailer stability assist, an adaptive damping system, sunroof, bi-xenon headlights, power liftgate, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, burl walnut trim, the Parktronic system with rearview camera, hand-free communication and voice-recognition capabilities, and more. The interior of all three will look familiar to M Class owners, but there are a few surprises. The middle row of seats is split 60/40, and tumbles on the passenger side for access to the third row. The third row has a reasonable amount of legroom, which makes the GL Class versatile as both a cargo and a people hauler. One of the neatest features on the vehicle is the two buttons in the rear cargo area that raise or lower either third seatback electrically. Total cargo space with both rows folded is a voluminous 83.8 cubic feet.Plenty of protection is built into the GLs. Besides a very strong roll cage body, passive safety items include permanent four-wheel-drive, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, an electronic stability program, traction control, and eight air bags. The GLs come standard with all the power accessories you'd expect, along with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a six-disc CD changer and a multi-function leather steering wheel. Bird's-eye maple trim (burl walnut on the GL550), eight-way power and heated front seats and HomeLink add to the SUV's luxurious feel.On the GL320 and GL430, optional rear park assist, running boards, xenon lights, harman/kardon audio, tri-zone climate control, leather seats, and a rear entertainment system ensure that the GL can be configured to just about any taste.Aside from the size of the family the vehicle can accommodate, what separates the GL from the M Class is the air-adjustable suspension. Besides being able to raise and lower the GL, you can also choose between a comfort and sport setting that produces an easily noticeable change in ride. It also automatically levels the front and rear end as the weight of the load varies.

2008 Benz G-Class Model Strengths: Copious off-road aptitude; military-burly, yet luxurious; spacious interior.

2008 Benz G-Class Model Changes: For 2008, the Mercedes-Benz G Class undergoes minor changes. Both the G500 and the G55 AMG receive a redesigned instrument cluster and steering wheel. A rearview camera is now standard, as is hands-free communication potential. Base prices have only slightly increased over 2007.

2008 Benz G-Class Model Value: The 2008 G Class is Mercedes-Benz's largest SUV, with 124 cubic feet of interior passenger space and 45 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The standard 5.0L V8 and available 5.5L V8 powertrains endow the G Class with an impressive 7,000-pound towing capacity, and also make the G-Wagen the most powerful SUV in the Mercedes stable. The G Class upholds the Mercedes reputation of unmatched luxury, but it is also sturdy and capable enough to be a rugged off-road machine. Its military heritage and high build quality means it has a pedigree few of its luxury-oriented peers can compete with.

2008 Benz G-Class Model Overview: Known as a Gelandewagen (or cross-country vehicle) at home, the Mercedes-Benz G Class was originally built as a military vehicle. Offered for many years to European customers, Mercedes finally brought the vehicle to North America in 2002, and named it the G Class. Appropriate to its military heritage, the G Class continues to be built with heavy-duty truck-style suspension and axles for 2008. The solid front and rear axles and three locking differentials will appeal to fans of hard-core off-roading, which is where the G Class shines brightest. The utilitarian appearance of the G Class further illustrates its military heritage. The vehicle's boxy appearance, the front grille and sharp edges seem to suggest that it was machined from a solid block of steel. The spare tire is even housed on the rear tailgate and encased in a stainless-steel shell. The G Class weighs in at a hefty 5,500 pounds. The base G500 has a 5.0L V8 that produces 292 horsepower and 336 ft-lbs of torque, which is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The standard bi-xenon headlights, also new, have dedicated high-pressure washers. Mercedes also includes heated power mirrors and rain-sensing wipers for adverse weather conditions.Inside, the power front seats have three-position memory and include pneumatic side bolsters. They are, of course, trimmed in leather. Mercedes-Benz's COMAND system includes a 6.5-inch LCD screen and allows control of the stereo, navigation system, climate control system, and vehicle systems all with one control knob. For 2008, a rearview camera is added to the list of standard gizmos, as is a hands-free communications setup. The included SmartKey system allows the user to keep his or her keys in their pocket. The car "senses" the driver approach, activates locator lighting, and unlocks the doors. Once the driver is seated, the vehicle starts with the push of a button. Rear parking assist and dual-zone climate control are also standard on all G Class models. The G55 AMG model features a 5.5L supercharged V8 engine that produces 493 horsepower and 516 ft-lbs of torque. It's connected to a five-speed adaptive automatic transmission with touch-shifting.The tires are monstrous 285/55VR18 treads with 18-inch AMG-specific aluminum wheels. The upgraded brakes are slotted and vented discs. Four exhaust tips extend out the back. A silver-painted grille and chrome turn signal cages complete the exterior appearance upgrade. Inside, Nappa leather upholstery and hand-polished maple wood trim enhance the aura of luxury.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Model Strengths: Interior comfort; top-technology luxury features; loads of standard safety items; potent performance; exclusive AMG models.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Model Changes: After being completely redesigned for 2007, the Mercedes-Benz CL Class returns for 2008 with a new 40th Anniversary Edition of the powerful, twin-turbo V12 CL65 AMG model, including two-tone diamond-pattern Nappa leather seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, a special Alcantara headliner inside and a unique Alubeam Liquid Metal finish outside. There will be only 40 made worldwide, including 20 planned for U.S. delivery.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Model Value: With prices that go well into the triple-digit range, the Mercedes CL Class may seem expensive at first glance, but it ranks as one of the most luxurious-and technologically advanced-coupes available at any price, and it costs significantly less than luxury coupes from prestige brands such as Bentley. With exclusive materials, the utmost interior comfort, standout high-tech features such as Distronic Plus and the night-vision system, and straight-line performance that rivals many sports cars, the CL550 and CL600 are good for those who want exclusivity and luxury without sacrificing comfort. The top-performance AMG versions have a different appeal, to those who value exclusivity and lap times yet still want the comforts of a true luxury vehicle.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Model Overview: The Mercedes-Benz CL Class is offered in four different versions. The ,b>CL550 is powered by a 388-horsepower, 5.5L V8 and seven-speed automatic transmission; next up is the CL600, which gets a 6.0L V12 engine that makes 510 horsepower and a noteworthy 612 lb-ft of torque. At the top of the line, at least for those interested in performance and exclusivity, are the two AMG versions; the CL63 AMG model gets a 518-horsepower, 6.3L V8, while the top-performance CL65 AMG gets a twin-turbocharged, 6.0L V12 engine making 604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft.The CL550 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in only 5.4 seconds, according to Mercedes-Benz, but the top-of-the-line CL65 AMG can blast to 60 mph in a stunning 4.2 seconds; it takes only 116 feet to brake from 60 mph to a standstill. Both AMG vehicles use engines that have been modified extensively for high-performance use and are hand-assembled with a "one man, one engine" philosophy. They also include huge brakes and wheels to handle the extra power, plus firmer suspension damping and a specially tuned version of the ESP stability control system. The entire line of CL Class coupes, which parallels the S Class sedan, serves as the technology flagship of the Mercedes-Benz line with a series of leading technology features available, some not offered on any other production vehicle. Standouts include the sophisticated active body control suspension, standard on all models, which almost instantaneously adjusts damping response to driving conditions; Distronic Plus cruise control, which will maintain a safe distance relative to traffic ahead and even bring the vehicle to a full stop, starting again when traffic moves; and a night-vision system that bathes the road ahead in infra-red light.Safety features are aplenty. Dual front side, side curtain, and knee bags are included, along with Brake Assist Plus, and an advanced Pre-Safe system that anticipates a potential crash and primes safety systems. This year, there's a 40th Anniversary Edition of the CL65 offered in a very limited number of 40 worldwide. The special version includes unique appearance cues inside and out, including diamond-pattern Nappa leather seats, a color-coordinated Alcantara headliner, and carbon-fiber interior trim. But what's most noticeable from a distance is the distinctive Alubeam Liquid Metal paint, made up of pigment particles that are a fraction of the size of those in conventional automotive paint. The paint reflects light more evenly and intensely, according to the automaker, with increased scratch resistance.

2008 Mercedes SL-Class Model Strengths: High performance luxury; high-tech comfort and safety features.

2008 Mercedes SL-Class Model Changes: For 2008, the Mercedes-Benz SL line is mostly unchanged. The SL550 gets new standard 18-inch wheels with a revised design. Newly available on the 2008 SL550 are Nappa leather seats. Base prices increase modestly across the line, from the SL550 at $95,300 to the SL65 AMG at $187,200.

2008 Mercedes SL-Class Model Value: The two-seat 2008 Mercedes SL roadster rides the line between high-performance and ultra-luxury. The V12 SL600 is especially exclusive and the SL55 and SL65 AMG versions really bring out the potential in these cars. The top SL65 AMG model is nearly twice the price of the SL550, but offers performance that can beat some exotic nameplates. Any of the models can be equipped with some extraordinary high-tech features-such as Dynamic Multicontour seats-that aren't available in many vehicles at any price.

2008 Mercedes SL-Class Model Overview: The 2008 Mercedes-Benz SL is offered in four variants: the V8-powered SL550 and V12-powered SL600, and the SL55 AMG and SL65 AMG, both high-performance-tuned, exclusive versions of the SL550 and SL600 respectively. The high-performance SL550 luxury roadster gets the same large, high-power V8 that's also offered in the big S-Class sedan. This engine churns out 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, and comes hooked to a seven-speed automatic transmission that helps out with the 0-60 times as well as more mundane real-world passing. The smooth, twin-turbo V12 in the SL600 makes 510 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. Both AMG versions feature engines hand-built by the Mercedes-Benz tuner house of the same name. In the SL55 AMG the V8 has been cranked up to 510 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque, while in the SL65 AMG the twin-turbo V12 produces a mammoth 604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque and can bring the SL to 60 mph in only 4.2 seconds. Each of the AMG cars, along with the SL600, have a five-speed automatic. All SL models have very large four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and brake assist. Other standard safety equipment includes ESP stability control and Active Body Control, a hydraulic active suspension system that helps keep the SL flat during severe cornering and braking and also helps improve ride during normal driving. The SL's retractable hardtop opens or closes with a single button in 16 seconds thanks to a sophisticated hydraulic system. With the top up, the trunk measures 10.2 cubic feet, but the capacity diminishes to 7.2 cubic feet with the top down-still enough for a couple of lightly packed golf bags or a carry-on suitcase. The SL550 comes with a full roster of top luxury features, including memory heated sport seats, a DVD-based COMAND navigation and audio system, Bose digital surround sound audio system with six-disc changer and Sirius satellite radio, and an automatic pop-up roll bar system, while the SL600 adds the Keyless Go entry and start system, a Nappa leather interior, electronic trunk closer, a heated steering wheel, and wood and leather trim. In addition to various trim and appearance changes, and larger brakes, both the SL55 AMG and SL65 AMG add sport seats with the Dynamic Multicontour feature, which helps adjust to keep occupants in place during cornering.Options on the SL550 include active ventilated seats, adaptive cruise control, and a panorama roof. A $5,460 package brings some of the features of the SL55 AMG-though not the engine-to the SL550, including AMG wheels with high-speed tires, compound brakes, and an AMG-designed steering wheel with black shift paddles.
