Also, larger wheels are installed across the line.
Toyota Highlander Model Value:
The new 2008 Toyota Highlander is nearly a half-step larger in size, offering significantly more vehicle and a roomier interior without a major jump in price. The base model is a strong value, especially considering the now-standard V6, while the Sport and Limited can be loaded to the gills with luxury features. Also, the Highlander offers a very robust list of standard safety features, and the most inclusive air bag coverage ever in a Toyota vehicle, with a total of seven air bags.
Toyota Highlander Model Overview:
Toyota's 2008 Highlander is available in base, Sport, and Limited models, each with either two-wheel or four-wheel drive. A 3.5L V6 engine making 270 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque is offered on all three, but there's also a Highlander Hybrid model, offered in base or Limited trims, that pairs a 3.3L V6 engine with an electric motor-generator system to make 270 horsepower together. The Hybrid now has an EV mode, for driving short distances at low speed on electric power only, and there's also an ECON mode that limits acceleration to conserve energy. Both powertrains are quite fuel efficient. The standard powertrain returns 18 city, 24 highway, and the Hybrid gets 27 city, 25 highway, according to the revised EPA estimates.Inside, there's now seating for seven, with a third-row seat that folds and stows away, and a 40/20/40-split folding second row that slides fore and aft and also reclines. A new Upgrade Package is available and adds back this formerly standard equipment. The navigation system, which in 2007 was a stand-alone option, is now only available with the content of the Upgrade Package.
Toyota Camry Model Value:
The 2008 Toyota Camry continues to live up to its reputation as one of the most sensible buys among mid-size sedans, from the frugal-but-well-equipped four-cylinder CE model to the V6 XLE that flirts with having luxury-car appointments. For 2008, Toyota has removed some standard equipment from the Hybrid, making it easier to go easy on the biosphere.
Toyota Camry Model Overview:
Toyota's 2008 Camry is available in many different trim levels, ranging from basic to luxurious, with either a four-cylinder engine or a V6. The 2.4L four-cylinder engine smoothly generates 158 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque, and it comes with either a five-speed manual or automatic. The 3.5L V6 develops 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 has Toyota's Dual VVT-i (variable valve timing with intelligence) system, which helps optimize power and efficiency through the entire operating range. The Camry Hybrid pairs an Atkinson-cycle 2.4L four-cylinder gasoline engine making 147 horsepower with a 40-horsepower electric motor system-together producing a combined 187 horsepower that places the Hybrid above the four-cylinder in terms of power. This grunt is delivered through a continuously variable transmission. The Hybrid also includes an "ECO" button that limits the power drawn by the climate control system and slightly increases fuel economy. All 2008 Camrys come with impressive standard safety equipment, including anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and brake assist, along with seat-mounted side air bags and side-curtain air bags. Vehicle stability control (VSC) is available as a standalone option, while Camry Hybrid models come with standard vehicle dynamics integrated management (VDIM), a stability control system that brings together inputs from the throttle, brakes, and steering and is able to make minor corrections to maintain stability.Besides the Hybrid, Camrys come in four different trim levels, including the economical CE, mid-range LE, lavishly equipped XLE, and sporty SE. The CE is only available with the four-cylinder, while the LE, XLE, and SE can be had with either engine. CE standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD sound system, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. The LE adds more features like a power driver's seat and remote keyless entry. XLE models include a long list of upgrades including dual-zone climate control, a 440-watt, eight-speaker JBL sound system with six-disc changer and Bluetooth compatibility, a power moonroof, reclining rear seats, aluminum wheels, and fog lamps. The sportier SE model adds a blackout grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a sport suspension with lower ride height to the LE's equipment. All Camrys get a multi-function display that includes trip-computer functions such as average fuel consumption, and the Hybrid model adds information about the powertrain's performance.Standalone options on the CE include vehicle stability control. Rugged off-road prowess; roomy interior for people and cargo; Toyota reliability; distinctive styling recalls past FJs; excellent NHTSA ratings.
Toyota FJ Cruiser Model Changes:
The 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser is little changed from the 2007 debut model. In the realm of safety, side air bags and side curtain air bags are now standard equipment. Gone is the TRD Special Edition, though much of its beefy equipment has been integrated into the new Trail Teams Special Edition, a truck limited to 3,200 units, which gets an exclusive Iceberg White paint job with black trim. Black Cherry Pearl exterior paint has been discontinued, though Brick Red and Sandstorm have been added.
Toyota FJ Cruiser Model Value:
IntelliChoice rated the 2007 Toyota FJ "Excellent" for its predicted five-year cost of ownership, so the little-changed 2008 FJ should follow that trend. The FJ Cruiser evokes fond memories of a tough-as-nails truck, though now buyers get amenities that make it a bit more civilized. The combination of Toyota's bomb-proof 4.0L V6, rugged off-road capabilities with 9.6 inches of clearance, surprisingly good highway presence, comfortable interior, and competitive pricing make the FJ Cruiser a smart alternative to offerings from Jeep and Hummer.
Toyota FJ Cruiser Model Overview:
Toyota's 2008 FJ Cruiser is about as tough as it gets when it comes to serious off-road machinery. The FJ basically comes three ways, while the Trail Teams Special Edition can be ordered for those who need a little bit more. All trucks carry Toyota's staid 239-horsepower 4.0L V6 with the company's excellent variable valve timing. It puts out a hefty 278 lb-ft of torque. The truck is available as a 4x2 with a five-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential, as a full-time 4x4 with a six-speed manual, or as a part-time 4x4 with the five-speed auto. Skid plates are fitted across the engine and front suspension, as well as the fuel tank. The 4x4 models add a skid plate to the transfer case.Standard exterior features across all three versions include rear release hatch glass, 17-inch black steel wheels with mud- and snow-rated tires, and a full-size spare. Inside you'll find air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3/WMA playback capability, power windows and locks, and rubberized floors for superior mud and water resistance. The FJ has few true options, as most convenience features are available in one of several packages. However, 17-inch aluminum wheels, daytime running lights, running boards, and rear intuitive parking assist can be ordered as standalone.Packages and accessories allow for total customization of the FJ Cruiser, though special options packages are only available on 4x4 models. The aluminum-block engine is similar to that used in the new Tundra full-size pickup, with direct ignition, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, and variable-length intakes; it now runs on regular unleaded gas and meets ULEV-II emissions. It delivers power through a new six-speed automatic transmission with a flexible-lockup torque converter for smoothness. All Land Cruisers have full-time four-wheel drive, including a low range, limited slip rear differential, and a locking Torsen center differential.A body-on-frame layout assures more long-term durability for the Land Cruiser than other unibody sport utility vehicles. For ease of entry to the third row, the second row on the passenger side has a one-touch tumble feature, and the second row adjusts about four inches fore and aft.The Land Cruiser has ten air bags-the most in any Toyota vehicle-and all eight seating positions have three-point seatbelts. Multi-terrain anti-lock brakes, with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and brake assist, are standard along with the VSC stability control system. Hill-start assist control (HSC) is also included and helps keep the vehicle stationary when starting from a stop on a steep incline or slippery surface, as is downhill assist control (DAC), a feature designed to regulate a target speed down steep slopes while off-roading.There's also a new feature called "Crawl Control." With the transfer case shifted to the low range, Crawl Control controls the throttle and brakes to maintain one of three speed settings ranging up to about 5 mph, allowing the driver to focus on steering around obstacles.Throughout, the new Land Cruiser has more sound insulation to yield a much quieter interior, plus there's a new air-conditioning system that's both quieter and more effective. The climate system has a micro-dust and pollen filter and four zones and 28 air vents throughout the cabin. The standard-features list on the Land Cruiser is surprisingly luxurious, including features such as a power moonroof, heated power seats, Smart Key keyless entry, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and a JBL sound system with six-disc in-dash CD/DVD changer and 14 speakers.Major options include a DVD rear entertainment system, Bluetooth hands-free communication, a back-up camera, second-row heated seats, and a touch screen navigation system that also includes a backup monitor, headlamp washers, and Bluetooth.
