The Volvo C30 is an all-new sporty two-door hatchback model. It's closely related mechanically to the S40 sedan and V50 wagon, but is much smaller, and therefore it promises to be considerably perkier to drive.

With its distinctive glass rear hatch and blackout trim, Volvo's new C30 has a much sportier appearance than any other vehicle in Volvo's line. It also is the only one to offer the Custom Build ordering process which allows customers, for just $300 extra, to opt up to additional color combinations, options, and accessories. However it's appointed, the interior is one of the most fashionable of any small car. The C30 breaks Volvo tradition in several ways, but doesn't forget about the brand's reputation for safety.

The new Volvo C30 brings a sporty edge to Volvo's lineup, and the hatchback has a unique interior treatment with four bucket seats; in back they fold flat to expand the cargo capacity from 12.9 cubic feet to 20.2 cu ft. In the U.S., the new C30 comes only in powerful T5 guise, with a 227-horsepower, 2.5L turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine. It has front-wheel drive, and is available with a six-speed manual gearbox or five-speed automatic with Geartronic manual selection.The C30 comes in two main trims, called Version 1.0 and Version 2.0. Version 1.0 is very well equipped compared with other vehicles in its price range; standard features include air conditioning, keyless entry, leather trim, steering-wheel audio controls, and a 160-watt, eight-speaker sound system. Version 2.0 builds on that with the Dynamic Chassis Control system for better handling, larger "Atreus" 18-inch alloy wheels, polished exhaust pipes, Sirius Satellite Radio, and a 650-watt Dynaudio sound system with ten speakers and Dolby surround sound. Stand-alone options include a power moonroof, leather upholstery, and on Version 2.0, a navigation system and power driver's seat. A Climate Package available on both models adds heated front seats, headlamp washers, and Rainsensor wipers.The C30 is the only Volvo vehicle to offer the Custom Build ordering process. For a minimal charge, customers will have a chance to build and order their own car with 17 exterior colors and 12 interior color combinations, plus additional options and accessories. Both models get a redesigned front end, including new headlamps and a larger Volvo logo, a color coordinated rear bumper and moldings, and new bright trim in back. Inside there are larger door pockets, a redesigned center console area, and improved air vents, plus the clock has been repositioned to the audio display. Audio systems have been improved with a standard auxiliary input and MP3 capability.The sporty T5 model gets a bump in performance for 2008; it's now up to 227 horsepower, from 218, but it's no longer offered with a manual transmission.The lineup of wheels has also been revised to help give the models a new look. The Volvo S40 sedan and V50 wagon are both offered in two primary models for 2008: the 2.4i and the T5. The loss of the 300-horsepower S60 R means that just two power options are available on Volvo's entry-level sedan for 2008. The base 2.5T relies on a low-boost, turbocharged 208-horsepower 2.5L inline five-cylinder to drive its front wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.5R AWD uses the same setup to power all four wheels, accompanied by Volvo's Instant Traction delivery system. Both wagons come with seating for five, but the back seat is split 40/20/40 and sections fold forward for expanded cargo space. The system is in addition to the available adaptive cruise control system, which follows a set distance behind traffic. Other major options include leather upholstery, a Dynaudio audio system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, automatic climate control, and a xenon high-intensity-discharge adaptive headlamp system that helps aim into corners.
